HEMMING THE PANTS
The pants come in a long length. Adjust shoulder straps to get a comfortable body length (check sitting and standing). Mark the length of the pants with the student wearing band shoes. Have the student stand straight, looking straight ahead. Turn up hem so that the front crease of the pants hangs in a straight line with no buckling. The hem will just touch the shoe. The length will be shorter than usual pants! Fold the extra fabric in (double and triple folds). Do not cut the pants! The hem may be bulky. That is OK. Press the hem, using a pressing cloth (not too hot; fabric is a wool/polyester blend and will scorch and trim can melt). Hand sew the hem with sturdy double black thread. Please do not machine sew the hems up because it permanently marks the fabric. Please do not tape or pin the hems up. This also permanently marks the pants. If you take them to a seamstress or dry cleaners to be hemmed, be sure to tell them NOT to cut the hem.
Students, marching pants are shorter than conventional pants. Your socks may show. Don’t worry! Be Happy! Everyone will look just like you.
